A very Austin afternoon

Otis and I spent the better part of today discovering Austin's antique shops and malls. Come to find out, most of them are located along Burnet Road. Just in case you're worried we've completely turned the corner of old married couple, we went looking for specific items, not merely to peruse the wonders of antiques. I was looking for a tea kettle, and Otis was looking for an old fashioned straight razor, like the ones barbers used to use (I'll let him explain more about that on his site).

We both ended up finding exactly what we were looking for at Austin's Antique Mall, located next to Playland Skate Center. I actually found 2 tea kettles that I liked. I couldn't decide between the 2, so I just got them both.

Otis found several straight razors in good shape and finally settled on 2, the most interesting of which is pictured below.

We took a break from antiquing and ate lunch at Phoenician Deli, a cool little Mediterranean market and deli. The food was amazing, and the prices in the shop were actually really good. I highly recommend it.

After spending most of the day on Burnet, we've realized we really love the old, unkempt, eclectic feel it has. There are other places around Austin with a similar vibe, but Burnet seems to have been one of the few areas not to have fallen prey to the snooty yuppies who have turned many of the other areas into places I don't feel worthy of venturing into. I hope Burnet can hold onto it's originality; sadly it seems these areas in Austin are fading in favor of the new.

Totally true, Burnet Road is AWESOME, and a dying Austin breed. I think that if our duplex was anywhere else, we already would have tried to move, but we just can't bear to leave this area. Once you get here it sucks you in! It seems to be equally beloved by the Crestview yuppies and the Allandale yuppies who live around it, so hopefully it will survive long into the future!!

Also, love the second teapot:)
